Tongariro Crossing & Waihohonu Track - 26 & 27 Jan 08

It was a long weekend for Aucklander's and we decided to make the most of it with two consecutive days of walking. We headed down to Turangi on Friday, where we stayed at Club Habitat.
A 6 o'clock wake up call on Saturday morning meant we were ready and on our way for Tongariro Crossing at 8am. And what a day, the weather was amazing and the views fantastic. There were a few small detours along the way...we checked out the Soda Springs (10 mins off the beaten track) before heading up the devils staircase and over the saddle. Andre and Mariska then headed up Mt Ngauruhoe, an awesome feat (2287m: 2hrs up, 1hr down) whilst Avril and Gina headed on to the Tongariro Summit (1967m: 1.5hr return). The crater lakes were stunning and the aroma of sulphur filled the air as we passed downwind of the hot springs. The team met up again at the finish line. Saturday night saw us consuming large amounts of pasta in preparation for our Sunday walk.

On Sunday we walked from State Highway 1 to Whakapapa Village via the Waihohonu Track, with a detour (of course!) to the Tama Lakes. Grey clouds covered the sky, and a few drops of rain were felt along the way. Strong winds greeted us at the look out over Upper Tama Lake. However, none of this detracted from the myriad of landscapes presented to us: tussock-country, desertlands and glacial river valleys.
A special thanks to Lorraine who joined us on our weekend excursion, Lorraine you are a A+ support crew member. Lorraine made the whole weekend possible in so many ways; from booking the accommodation, tidying up our breakfast dishes, waking up early with us to drop us off at the start of the walks to picking us up from the finish line with cold drinks, food galore and changes of footwear. What a star! Additionally, Lorraine joined us for the start of the Tongariro Crossing and the end of the Waihohonu Track walk.

Huia - Twin Peaks & Waterfalls - Sun 13 Jan 08

Another great team walk! This time through the Waitakere bush! We had planned a circular route... and only discovered along the way that it included the highest point in the Waitakere ranges... great excuse for a photo and snack break! What can we say - we made it to the highest point in the Waitakere's! Towards the end of the walk we stopped at a beautiful waterfall for our lunch... where Andre decided to brave the freeezing cold water for a swim.... NUTTER!

Waiheke Fun Run - Sat 12th Jan 08

OUR FIRST TEAM WALK ALL TOGETHER!

An enthusiastic start of the new year for our team: we have now made a schedule of all the walks we'll do before the big day in April- if you wish to join us for any please dont hesitate to let us know! Our fundraising is currently approaching 30% of our target! It's great to feel supported by everyone, thank you all very much!

We got together for the Waiheke Fun Run, a 25km walk/run and the first official walk that all 4 team members walked together. The weather was incredible, the company great, and the rewards for going up steep hills were stunning views. We did really well by completing the course in 3 hours and 59 minutes! And since Waiheke, a small island off the east coast of Auckland is so well known for its wineries.... we felt we needed to treat ourselves to a glass of wine at one of the many wineries on the island before taking the ferry back to the city.
What a great way to spend a Saturday! Who says training can't be fun?!
Can't wait for next weekend...
